Come and help out on one of our alpaca shearing days. You will also learn and gain the confidence to skirt, sort and grade your own fibre.

We shear about 80 alpacas per day. Fleeces are semi-sorted into 1, blanket, 2, neck and 3, leg fibre. These are weighed and recorded separately, then the blanket fibre is transferred to the sorting table, where it is graded into under 16 micron, under 18 micron, under 20 micron, etc., checked for colour contamination, and skirted; then bagged. If not quite dry the fleeces are spread on clean tarpaulins and dried with fans before bagging.

Lunch is provided – cold meats and cheese, bread and salad. Unfortunately we cannot cater for special diets on shearing days, but you are welcome to bring your own lunch.

N.B.  Weekdays only

There is no charge for this learning experience.
